4A: Forming An Opportunity Belief

  1. Beginning point: I believe that there is an increasing need for clear purses and bags.
  2. To further explain, the item that is increasing in demand is clear purses and/or bags. This is due to new rule that high schools are now implementing at all their sporting events. This rule was announced a couple of weeks ago and family members and high school sports fans are scrambling to find affordable purses. This is aside from the demand that comes from college students that attend their team’s football games in the fall semester. I am 100% sure this is occurring because I have attended a few high school football games in the past month and have seen the increasing need for these items.
  3. Interviews:
  • The prototypical customer for this item can be described as middle-aged adults attending their children’s games. I approached a parent at one of the football games I went to and was able to ask her a few questions about this situation. I specifically chose this woman because I noticed that as she was walking into the game she had a bunch of personal items (wallet, phone, keys) in her hands. She told me that had actually not even heard of the news until the night before and hadn’t gotten the chance to go look for a clear purse. Furthermore, she said she wouldn’t even know where to look for this very specific type of bag. This conversation highlights how the demand of this item is slowly increasing and how the marketing and exposure of this item is also needed.
  •  Another typical customer would be kids from the ages of 11-18 attending their middle school and high school sporting events. There were many students from the high school at the football game supporting their team. I started talking to some girls and they said that they had heard about the news about a week and a half ago when they read an article on Facebook. As soon as they learned about the new regulations they went directly to the nearest mall and got clear bags. They were huge fans of their school’s sporting events and did not want to miss any games because they had the wrong bags. Finding the clear bags was the hardest part for them. They said they went into at least 6 stores before they could find one, and when they did they couldn’t wait for the next football game.
  • The third prototypical customer would be your average college student from the ages of 18-25. This is not exactly part of the problem I am talking about in the rest of the post, but this demographic is a large portion of the population that buys this particular item. For this interview I approached a UF student that was waiting in line to get her BEAT shirt this morning. For her it was freshman year (approximately 2 years ago) when she needed to buy a clear purse in order to take her belongings to the gator games. She said she actually had no issue finding a purse because the bookstore on campus sold them in all shapes and sizes.
4. Reflection: After I spoke to a few people about the issue I realized that my belief about the need for clear purses increasing was correct. The most surprising part for me was how difficult it was for the high schoolers and the parents to find the bags as opposed to the college student. This shows that the supply of this item is not as readily available for people outside the college football world as it should be. It is also understandable that this is happening considering how new this regulation is.
5. Summary: From when I started writing this post to the time after I did the interviews the opportunity is still available and more accurate than before. Right now would be a very good time to invest in the purse making business. Firms can maybe think about making clear bags, or at least make a special sports line that is released in the summer right before football season starts in the fall. Another idea could be having a sports line that caters to colleges, high schools, and middle schools that could customize each teams logo on the bags.
